franceinfo: Among the issues that stand the test of time, inflation holds a good place. Why is its management a problem today?
Anne de Guigne: What really touched me while writing this book was to see how much our debates resemble those of the Romans. Diocletian is known by economists for his maximum edit in 301. An edict in which he fixed a maximum price for all the major commodities and services of the time. This is exactly the program of some politicians today to fight against inflation. Viktor Orban did it in Hungary, and if it were done in France it would have the same effects. This creates side effects, suddenly you create barter and production collapses because if people no longer earn money by selling their goods, they stop producing, and inflation doubles.
Why this stutter of certain leaders?
I think mistakes speak louder than successes. And, for me, this error bias was above all a way, not so much of saying that they are all pathetic, but a way of talking about politics and economics through errors.
