Baby sitter, Monia Chokri’s second feature film, has been selected for the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival which runs January 20-30.
The film is the adaptation of the eponymous play by Catherine Léger who signs the screenplay. It tells the story of Cédric (Patrick Hivon), a man in his thirties who, after having uttered a sexist joke that has gone viral, must face the multiple consequences that ensue, even if it means sinking into political correctness.
In the character of Nadine, Monia Chokri will give the answer to Patrick Hivon while Steve Laplante plays the brother, journalist by profession, of Cédric and publicly repudiates him. The cast also includes Nadia Tereszkiewicz and Hubert Proulx.
Two other Canadian films are in the program, namely the documentary Framing Agnes and the virtual reality experience This is not a Ceremony directed by Ahnahktsipiitaa (Colin Van Loon) and produced by the NFB. This is listed in the New Frontier section.
82 feature films
The announced program of the festival includes 82 feature films, fiction and documentaries. In addition, there are six series projects and fifteen virtual projects to which adapters will have access via a platform called The Spaceship.
Among the many films to watch, we note the feature film 892 by Abi Damaris Corbin in which John Boyega (Star wars) is a retired soldier who, the day he is no longer receiving disability payments, holds up a financial institution for survival.
Actress Dakota Johnson will be two feature films either Cha Cha Real Smooth by Cooper Raiff and Am I OK? by Stephanie Allynne and Tig Notaro in which the long-standing friendship between two friends is put to the test the day one of them announces her move to London.
Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver star in Call jane, a film by Phyllis Nagy in which a woman living in Chicago in 1968 and having had an abortion opens a clinic to allow safe abortions to women who request them. Another very similar feature film, The Janes by Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes, is also in the lineup.
Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) works again with his wife Bérénice Bejo in Final cut, film with a rather hilarious scenario. As a group of actors struggle to complete a low budget zombie movie, they are attacked by real zombies! Romain Duris and Grégory Gadebois are also in the cast.
British actress Emma Thompson will star in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, Sophie Hyde’s film where a retired teacher hires a sex worker to have a good time.
In the field of documentaries, one of them, We Need to Talk About Cosby examines the case of Bill Cosby, convicted of sexual assault (the conviction was overturned a few months ago and the case was referred to the Supreme Court). Should we or should not separate man from his art, we ask.
Another documentary, Downfall: The Case Against Boeing, examines the case of the crashes of two Boeing 737 Max planes.
According to the official statement issued by Sundance executives, the fictional feature films will be shown to a public in Park City, Utah before a version accompanied by a question and answer session is posted online.
