American screenwriters on strike?

Only a few hours remain for the American film and television industry and the Writers Guild of America to find an agreement. Screenwriters union has warned members to prepare for strike, reports HollywoodReporter.

The current negotiations concern, among other things, the mode of remuneration of screenwriters in an industry increasingly shaped by streaming. The existing resale rights would not be adapted to the planetary successes of TV series such as Stranger Things, according to the authors. They also complain of seeing their wages stagnate while the cost of living increases.

The giants of streaming, they plead having to reduce their costs, in a context where competition is growing. The market is indeed fragmenting more and more with the entry on the scene of Disney+ and AppleTV+ in recent years.

The threat of a strike if a deal isn’t reached by midnight Monday sounds serious: The Writers Guild of America has asked its members to fill out a survey as to where they would be willing to picket, according to HollywoodReporter.

A writers’ strike would shut down popular shows like late show and would lead to the postponement of television series currently in production or in preparation.
