Policy professional | The duty

Pierre Poilievre, this figurehead of the Conservative Party, today embodies a copy of the Trumpist model which cannot leave anyone indifferent, as the risks it poses to democracy are great. Like the former American president, Poilievre cultivates a rhetoric aimed at lulling the people to the siren songs of populism.

The affinities between the two characters are troubling: a propensity to use inflammatory rhetoric and conspiracy theories, an exacerbated distrust of the media and an assumed populism that plays with facts and truth. It is therefore urgent to take seriously the risks that the rise of this type of discourse poses to our democracy. By dividing citizens, stirring up hatred and resentment, ignoring the facts and flouting the rules of the democratic game, Poilievre and his cronies pose a real danger to social stability.

Although Poilievre claims to care about the people, his actions show otherwise. His unbridled ambition only tends to quench his thirst for power, relegating popular concerns to the background. Politics as Poilievre practice is a dangerous playground. His maneuvers and strategies are only intended to serve his own rise in the political hierarchy. The national interest, when it is not completely eclipsed, is for him only a subsidiary element.

Pierre Poilievre has little regard for the needs of his fellow citizens. His leadership can only lead to a loss of confidence in the democratic institution. It is high time that the national interest takes precedence over the ambitions of these political professionals.
