A geopolitical opportunity | The duty

According to author Stéphane Rosière, geopolitics takes into consideration space, time and cultural, social and political dimensions. It is unique in describing complex regional situations. Also, in order to better analyze geopolitics, it is necessary to understand the geographical dimension of the strategy, namely geostrategy.

Still according to Mr. Rosière, geostrategy must above all be considered as a specific extension of geopolitics, requiring a specific vocabulary.

It is in light of the new tensions in the Taiwan Strait that Quebec and Canada should develop a new geostrategic approach to this region of the world, particularly Taiwan.

It should be remembered that Taiwan is a democracy that is constantly threatened by the dictatorship of the Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China. Taiwan is Canada’s 13th largest trading partner and 5th in Asia.

In 2019, Quebec signed a three-year agreement with Taiwan concerning an artist exchange program and studio-residences between Quebec and Taiwan. Quebec and Canada have close ties with Taiwan. However, it would be desirable for Quebec and Canada to accelerate the strengthening of their ties with Taiwan from a geopolitical and geostrategic perspective, because after the repeated attacks on democracy in Canada through Beijing’s interference in our electoral process, it is time to send a clear signal of solidarity with Taiwan.
