Emmanuel Macron’s speech on Monday April 17 at 8 p.m. is eagerly awaited. For the executive, this speech is supposed to close the sequence of pension reform, after the promulgation of the law on Friday evening.

The president will be alone in front of the camera for what the Élysée calls a “address to the French”. It is not an interview by journalists like a month ago, but a speech, a prepared speech of 10 to 15 minutes maximum. This type of format allows the president to send a message directly to the French, without having to answer embarrassing questions. The intervention can be recorded, if Emmanuel Macron is ready beforehand, or broadcast live.
The will to open a new political sequence
Emmanuel Macron will first try to conclude the sequence of retreats in a logic of appeasement, talk about “the way the French have lived in recent weeks, but also how he, president, has lived it”, indicates its surroundings. Emmanuel Macron then has the will to open a new political sequence, in order to reiterate that “pensions are not the alpha and omega”. He will also recall why he was elected, posing as president, guarantor of the reform agenda.
Emmanuel Macron therefore intends to “set a course” and talk about future projects. Employment, daily newspaper, order, it will undoubtedly redevelop the triptych announced a month ago, with a greater focus on good employment figures and industry. We know that the government is going to put the question of hardship and the work of seniors back on the job.
The president also wants to materialize two measures of his presidential project: the sharing of value in companies and the creation of a universal “Time Savings Account”. We can also expect him to develop topics related to the daily life of the French. Like education and youth, or even health with a reflection on medical deserts and access to care, a consensual subject which has the potential to bring together the French but also the different political camps in Parliament.
A minister close to Emmanuel Macron also believes that the “‘Unblocking’ the five-year term will be done on concrete subjects, step by step”.
