Many parents download pieces of white noise to help their children fall asleep. (ALE VENTURA / MAXPPP)

White noise, like the purr of a high-end vacuum cleaner, or the sound of the wind we like to hear outside when we’re snug inside, has never been so fashionable. Especially for parents who are desperately looking for a solution to put their baby or toddler to sleep.

Over a billion streams

White noise can be of great help to them. In any case, that’s what many parents seem to think who download or listen to me streaming on Spotify-type platforms by the millions and even more than a billion times for the most listened to song. Pieces of white noise that are a hit to the point of making some artists green with envy, a little annoyed to see that a vacuum cleaner noise is more successful than their music.

The name, “white noise” is an analogy to white light. Just as overlapping visible spectrum waves results in the color white, when you overlap auditory frequencies, you get white noise. And this one would have hypnotic properties, and especially the capacity to stifle the small disturbing noises which prevent you or prevent your children from falling asleep.

An efficiency yet to be proven

But there are very few scientific studies on its real effectiveness, and some researchers even call for attention to the risk of addiction, and to prefer pink noise for babies. Pink noise is a kind of variation of white noise, but with less intensity at the higher frequencies – the sound of falling rain or water rushing down a torrent, for example.

Whatever it is, whether you are more white or pink, you will easily find what you are looking for. With comforters and special white noise nightlights on the shelves, and thousands of songs to download and listen to on the platforms. If it is not scientifically proven that white noise relaxes, it is no longer to be proven that it pays.
