Is this the end of Tupperware and an entire era? The brand, which gave its name to the famous plastic boxes and changed the way of consuming for several generations for 77 years, is on the verge of bankruptcy.
Tupperware boxes are known all over the world. But today, the brand founded in 1946 is close to bankruptcy. The American brand had made a name for itself thanks to its famous meetings, up to 4,000 a day in 1978. A formidable method which allowed it to interfere in homes. But 77 years later, Tupperware is having a hard time.
Tupperware could close its factories
Tupperware’s sales fell by 20% in 2022: customers are turning away from it for glass products, deemed less polluting, and the company has not been able to take the digital turn. “It’s the perfect illustration that the company hasn’t done enough to stay relevant. (…) People buy online today and Tupperware is not there“, observes Rick Newman, editorial writer at Yahoo Finance. With a debt of more than 600 million euros, the company could close its last European sites, in Portugal and Belgium. The French factory in Tours (Indre-et- Loire) had closed in 2018.
