For some consumers, checking the Nutri-Score of a food product has become a reflex. According to a study by UFC-Que Choisir, this scale encourages manufacturers to improve the quality of their products. The association asks Europe to make it compulsory.

For some consumers, the Nutri-Score, which indicates the nutritional quality of food products, makes all the difference. “We pay attention to certain products, such as cereals or cakes”, indicates a consumer. “I have health problems from that point of view, so I’m careful”said a passerby. “It is a powerful incentive to put pressure (…), improve quality and reduce fat, salt and sugar levels”observes Olivier Andrault, food project manager at UFC-Que Choisir.

Absent from 40% of food products

In a few years, product quality has improved: 62% of sandwich breads and rusks, 49% of cereal bars and 38% of cereals are rated A, B or C. But some manufacturers still refuse to play the game: thus, the Nutri-Score is absent from 40% of food products, in particular ice creams, sorbets, sauces and cereal bars.
