Maple syrup production down in Canada

(Ottawa) In 2021, the harvest of Canadian maple syrup producers was 11.3 million gallons, including 10 million gallons from Quebec.



Statistics Canada observed that the total Canadian production of maple syrup this year was 21% lower than that of 2020. This decline follows two consecutive years of record production.

The drop in production in 2021 is explained by the warm spring temperatures observed in the four maple syrup producing provinces, which shortened the sugar season. In Quebec, production fell by about 18 million kilograms of syrup from the previous year, to 60 million kilograms.

In 2021, New Brunswick’s total maple syrup production was 785.7 thousand gallons. Producers in Ontario and Nova Scotia harvested 461.9 thousand gallons of maple syrup and 36 thousand gallons, respectively.

Statistics Canada reports that global demand for Canadian maple syrup continues to grow.

In the first three quarters of 2021, producers exported 1.3 million gallons more than in the same period in 2020, which translated into an increase of 21.4%. In all, 7.6 million gallons were exported in 2021, compared to 6.3 million gallons during the same period in 2020.

This year, the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers had to draw on their reserves to meet export demands. Last month, the Quebec organization indicated that it would put on the world market by February 23 million kilograms of maple syrup, a value of approximately 150 million.
