(Augusta) Tiger Woods withdrew from the Masters Tournament before play resumed for the third round on Sunday.
Tournament organizers confirmed the news about 90 minutes before play resumed. They explained that Woods, who is still bothered by the effects of a car accident he was involved in in 2021, pulled out due to injury.
The five-time Masters champion had been seen limping during practice rounds earlier in the week and then again during rounds one and two.
Woods had narrowly avoided the ax after the second round on Saturday with a cumulative score of 147 (74-73), three strokes over par.
He had thus equaled a tournament record by obtaining his ticket for the two final rounds in Augusta for a 23e times in a row.
When play was halted at Augusta National due to driving rain on Saturday afternoon, the 47-year-old golfer was plus-9, last among players who had advanced to the third round.
Woods had never retired from the Masters Tournament before in his career.
However, he also pulled out before the final round of the PGA Championship last year due to what his agent described as pain in his right foot.
