[Critique] “They will end up having you”, Sébastien Diaz

Disappeared for a while, Sophie Routhier returns to Saint-Hubert in a deplorable state. Covered in mud, smelling of “sweat, piss and the smell of spoiled chicken rotting on the counter”, she settles down to announce what awaits humanity in the coming months. An uninterrupted series of nightmarish scenes thus occurs for a whole year before the grand finale. First novel for animator and director Sébastien Diaz, They’ll get you eventually is an apocalyptic fresco on a background of visual arts in which he recounts in great detail the fall of an empire that has been running to ruin for a long time. The whole thing is presented in an abundance of horror scenes teeming with blank verse, bloodthirsty characters and vomit. Too much vomit. In a style adorned with overrated metaphors, an adulterated atmosphere, Diaz reveals his passion for the gore effect without ever managing – and it is not for lack of trying – to arouse dread or disgust.
