(Quebec) The metropolis is “devastated”, launched Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon on Thursday, who took stock with his colleague François Bonnardel on the ice storm which plunged more than a million homes into darkness. Prime Minister François Legault is on his way to Montreal.

Montreal is devastated, you have to be very sensitive to that, ”said the Minister of Economy and Energy, also responsible for the metropolis, during a press briefing Thursday at the National Assembly. Pierre Fitzgibbon indicated that François Legault left Quebec for Montreal, where he will take stock with the Hydro-Quebec teams.
Mr. Fitzgibbon specified that Wednesday’s bad weather did not cause any damage to the main electrical transmission network or to Hydro-Québec’s strategic assets. Another consolation: a quarter of outages affect 1,000 subscribers or more, so are very concentrated, which allows the state corporation to focus its efforts on “strategic locations” in Greater Montreal.
“The other good news is that there are a lot of teams in place. There are approximately 557 teams at work at present, which represents more than 1,100 workers, as many from Hydro-Québec as from independent contractors, pruners and company. So there are a lot of people who are at work right now, and there are neighboring provinces that will also be offering their services for workers,” the Minister pointed out.
According to Minister Fitzgibbon, a third of subscribers will be able to regain power within 24 hours.
The events bring to the fore the issue of burying power lines to protect the network from climate change, in particular. Pierre Fitzgibbon mentioned that “pharaonic” investments would be necessary, without specifying them. “These are very, very important figures, but everything must be considered. Once again, security and logistics are clearly a concern for Hydro-Québec and for our government,” said Mr. Fitzgibbon.
Before the question period, the minister specified in an answer in English that burying the lines could cost 100 billion. ” Someone [chez Hydro-Québec] told me it would cost 100 billion. That would be good, but realistically, there are other measures where we could spend 100 billion,” the minister revealed on Thursday.
“We were ready”, says Bonnardel
Public Security Minister François Bonnardel said he was in communication with towns affected by the ice storm for the cleanup operation. He also called on the population to be careful, asking them to avoid “camping at home”.
Deux centres pour sinistrés sont ouverts, à Cantley en Outaouais et à Laval. D’autres pourraient s’ajouter au cours des prochaines heures, selon M. « On était prêts, et les centres de coordination étaient prêts aussi à être en opération sur les territoires les plus touchés, pour ne pas nommer Montréal, Laval, Laurentides, même de Lanaudière aussi, et du côté de l’Outaouais. Donc, on était prêts pour ça. Comme je l’ai mentionné, il n’y a pas de sentiment d’urgence nulle part », a rassuré le ministre de la Sécurité publique.
Toute la classe politique a offert son soutien aux sinistrés et aux travailleurs d’Hydro-Québec qui sont à pied d’œuvre pour rétablir le courant.
« Alors, le message aux citoyens et citoyennes : soyez prudents. Soyez prudents si vous avez à sortir pour vos déplacements. Prudence également s’il y a des bris, entre autres fils électriques, comme le disait Hydro-Québec hier. Soyez extrêmement prudents de garder un trois mètres de distance », a affirmé le chef intérimaire du Parti libéral du Québec, Marc Tanguay.
« Ce n’est pas facile d’être dans l’inconnu comme ça, d’être plongé dans le noir, surtout qu’on est encore, disons, à la fin de l’hiver, au début du printemps. Donc, ça a des conséquences très concrètes sur le monde. Et puis, je pense aux gens qui sont touchés ce matin », a affirmé le chef parlementaire de Québec solidaire, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, lui-même touché par la panne.
« Des milliers de citoyennes et citoyens de Camille-Laurin sont touchés par les pannes d’électricité en raison de la pluie verglaçante. À Montréal, c’est [la moitié] households that are affected. My team is in contact with [Hydro-Québec] and we are monitoring the situation closely. Let’s show civic sense and be kind to each other, ”wrote Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon on Twitter.
