After several days when the gas station pumps emptied, the situation seems to be improving at the national level. With the various mobilizations against the pension reform blocking or disrupting several refineries and oil depots, fuel was sometimes difficult to find in certain regions. To follow the level of gasoline or diesel shortages at the national and departmental level, franceinfo offers you two regularly updated infographics.
Across France, on April 2, 9.5% of service stations were short of at least one fuel, and 2.9% of them were already completely dry, according to franceinfo calculations made from official data (see our methodology at the bottom of the page). At the height of the crisis, on March 27, these shortages affected 15.9% of the stations. Limited difficulties on a national scale, especially if we compare them to those of last October, which then affected half of the stations in France.
But the situation at the pump varies greatly from one department to another, and it is still tense in certain areas, particularly in Ile-de-France. In Val-de-Marne, 51% of stations were short of at least one fuel on April 2. In Indre-et-Loire, this figure rose to 43%. In Essonne, 38% of service stations were in difficulty. Some departments have already taken restrictive measures. Limitation of refueling to 30 liters for individuals, ban on filling jerry cans… In Vaucluse, where the situation has worsened “much faster” that last October, explained the prefect on France Bleu. Other departments, such as Gard, Var or Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, have followed suit, with the aim of avoiding a generalized shortage.
Methodology
The share of service stations out of fuel is calculated by franceinfo based on information reported by the managers of these stations to the government and published on the Prix-carburants.gouv.fr website (annual file). The declaration of prices at the pump is compulsory for any manager of a point of sale that distributes more than 500,000 liters of fuel per year.
Petrol stations whose data has not been updated since January 1, 2023 have been excluded from the calculation. We then determined, for each hour of the day, the proportion of stations out of fuel; then calculated a 24-hour average. We thus obtain a number per day. This methodology may differ from one media to another, which explains the slight differences in the figures presented.
A station is considered to be out of fuel if it has no more unleaded 95, or unleaded 95 E10, or unleaded 98. It is considered to be completely out of stock if it no longer has diesel and gasoline.
