In the anesthesia department of the Martigues hospital center in the Bouches-du-Rhône, one out of two positions is unfilled and is occupied by a temporary worker. The schedule for the next few days is therefore a real headache. “We need four or five days of temporary workers to run the operating theater and the consultations properly.lists Dr. Najat Abidar. The risk is to postpone interventions to I don’t know when! We are awaiting their response. If they don’t come, we can’t run the service.”

The temporary doctors are called by their union to boycott the hospital from Monday April 3 because of the application of the Rist law. They refuse the government’s decision to cap their remuneration at 1,390 euros gross for 24-hour duty. A strike threat that worries small unattractive hospitals where the use of temporary workers has become the norm.

Make the hospital attractive

Until now, guards at Martigues hospital were charged 1,600 euros, far from certain amounts mentioned in recent days. “I have heard numbers that strike me as absolutely staggering and which, in my opinion, are not far from disinformationexplains this furious interim to be called a mercenary. When I hear 6 to 7,000 euros per 24-hour shift, I’m surprised. Or maybe it’s a maternity ward that wasn’t supposed to find staff for Christmas Day, but it’s really on the fringe!”

According to this interim doctor, the government is wrong. It is not by capping remuneration that the hospital will become more attractive: “Instead of bringing something, to retain the caregivers who are there, point this doctor, we will manage to disgust them.”

“Perhaps the working conditions and salaries of caregivers should be improved to retain them. However, this is not the case.”

“How to redirect patients so that care remains guaranteed?”

Like him, several temporary workers will not come to work this week, but Loïc Mondoloni, the director of this hospital center, wants to be reassuring. No service is threatened in his establishment for the moment. “The worry that remainspoints this director, it is that of the summer period which, usually, is already a complicated period. With this measure, it risks being more so because we can have demobilization among the candidates.

For the director of the Martigues hospital center, the question of anticipation is essential. “The objective is to be able to determine how to redirect patients so that care remains guaranteed despite everything. Whether it is on our local territory with the private establishments which are around us, or with our attached CHU which is the Public Assistance Hospitals of Marseille. In July and August, the use of temporary workers is at its highest to replace carers who have gone on vacation.
