In a newspaper interview The echoes, Pascal Canfin, points to the implementation of the electric car leasing at 100 euros, that is to say this long-term rental system promised by Emmanuel Macron during his campaign. It is too late, according to the MEP. The objective was to allow low-income households to have access to an electric vehicle without advancing the money or paying a large sum, because today, electric cars are still much more expensive than conventional vehicles. French manufacturers have almost no electric models at affordable prices. Before launching its leasing offer, the government wants to be sure that there is a real tricolor sector capable of offering vehicles, otherwise it amounts to financing and sponsoring foreign electric cars, and in particular Chinese ones. Because the Chinese are very competitive in this sector. In fact, if the government launched its 100 euro leasing offer today, there would be very few French cars.

Builders call for help

French manufacturers are not going fast enough and there are several reasons: going all-electric is not profitable enough. Lately, under pressure from Germany, they have also said that Europe was going to reconsider the transition to new zero-emission cars in 2035. Finally, no: it was recorded this week. Manufacturers are asking for state aid by raising the threat of relocation, or in any case, the risk of setting up their future factories on the American continent to be able to benefit from American subsidies, as has just been announced by the German Volkswagen. Joe Biden, the US President, is currently deploying billions of dollars to attract foreign investors.

The French government could help the manufacturers, insofar as the European rules applying to aid have just changed. The French government also wants to create industrial jobs, it is under discussion. Otherwise, Pascal Canfin proposes to ensure a minimum of purchases of electric cars. In other words, the state could guarantee a certain volume of orders to encourage manufacturers to mass produce electric vehicles.
