On Thursday March 30, the Russian authorities announced that they had arrested Evan Gershkovich, an American journalist accused of espionage by Moscow. “These are not just allegations. Evan Gershkovich has been caught red-handed. Those with normal journalistic activity and valid accreditations will be able to continue working”said Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin.
The Wall Street Journal denies Moscow’s accusations
In recent Russian history, this is the first time an American journalist has been arrested for spying. “The Wall Street Journal vehemently denies Russia’s accusations and calls for the immediate release of our dedicated reporter Evan Gershkovich”, responded in a statement to the daily. The 31-year-old American journalist has been remanded in custody until May 29, pending a possible trial. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
