New BEI investigation into Quebec police

The Independent Investigations Bureau (BEI) is launching a new investigation into a police intervention by the Service de police de la ville de Québec (SPVQ), but the latter is not related to the videos that have caused controversy recently.

The investigation relates to a police intervention carried out on July 31 in the evening on Cartier Street, indicates the press release of the BEI. A 50-year-old man then allegedly made a call to 911 because he feared for his safety.

An SPVQ police officer arrived on the scene then “was involved in a physical altercation with the man”, who was “seriously injured” and “taken to hospital”.

According to our information, this investigation is not related to the one launched on Monday on two videos showing strong interventions by the SPVQ.

This is the sixth independent investigation conducted at the SPVQ this year. It should be remembered that the BEI systematically investigates police interventions resulting in serious injuries or deaths.

Since the organization was created in 2016, a total of 249 investigations have been launched within police forces, including 95 at the Sûreté du Québec, 54 at the Service de police de la ville de Montréal (SPVM) and 15 at the SPVQ . None of these investigations resulted in indictments against the SPVQ.
