He held his first presidential campaign rally for the 2024 election. From Waco, Texas, Donald Trump swept aside his possible indictment on Saturday March 25. “The New York District Attorney, under the auspices and direction of the ‘Department of Injustice’ in Washington DC, was investigating me for something that is neither a felony nor a misdemeanor”, he told his followers. Justice seeks to determine whether the former American president was guilty of false declarations – which would constitute an offense -, or of breach of the laws on electoral financing – which would be a criminal offense -, by having paid the money to buy the silence of pornographic actress Stormy Daniels.

The meeting was also held in a highly symbolic place. The Texas city was indeed the scene, 30 years ago, of a murderous assault against a sect opposed to federal power. In the spring of 1993, the world was suspended for 51 days by the FBI’s siege of a ranch in which armed followers of guru David Koresh had entrenched themselves. Seventy-six members of the sect, including 20 children, were found dead after the ranch fire. Four police officers were also killed. Donald Trump’s campaign team did not respond to requests from AFP as to the choice of Waco for the meeting.
