Bellechasse: a body in a block of ice pulled from the St. Lawrence

The body of a man was found trapped in a block of ice, in Beaumont in Bellechasse, on Saturday evening.

Around 5 p.m., a passerby saw the body covered in frost being carried by the waves to rocks along the St. Lawrence River.

City firefighters were the first to arrive on the scene. However, since the location where the body was discovered was not accessible to road vehicles in winter, the first responders had to use ATVs to access the water’s edge.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) then dispatched investigators and forensic identification technicians to shed light on the situation.

Later in the evening, it remained impossible to know who was hiding under the thick layer of ice. The spokeswoman for the SQ, Béatrice d’Orsainville, estimated that “it would take several hours before being able to identify the person”.
