U.S. e-commerce giant Amazon plans to cut 9,000 jobs over the next few weeks, its chief executive, Andy Jassy, said in a memo to staff on Monday.
The job cuts would mark the second largest round of layoffs in the company’s history, adding to the 18,000 others already announced in January.
In his memo, Mr Jassy says the second phase of the company’s annual planning process was completed this month and has led to additional job cuts. He clarified that Amazon would still be hiring in certain strategic areas.
“Some may wonder why we haven’t announced these role reductions along with the ones we announced a few months ago. The short answer is that not all teams completed their analyzes by late fall; and rather than rush into these assessments without the proper due diligence, we chose to share these decisions as we made them so that people have the information as soon as possible,” Jassy explained.
Most of the job cuts concern the remote computing activity (cloud computing) Amazon Web Services (AWS), the PXT department, dedicated to human resources management, the staff dedicated to advertising, as well as the Twitch live video, the executive said.
