Fire in Old Montreal | Someone is always missing

Firefighters had still not located the missing person the day after the fire that ravaged a building in Place D’Youville, in the Old Montreal area.

“Nobody entered the building. We are still to see if we can return and if so, how we are going to do it, ”said Martin Guilbault, division manager at the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM).

Some of the teams remained on site last night to extinguish the last vestiges of the major fire. Nearly 120 firefighters were mobilized to bring the blaze under control on Wednesday.

A large perimeter was still in place the day after the event because of the risk of the heritage building collapsing.

Engineers are to return to the scene Friday morning to assess the structure of the heavily damaged heritage building. The firefighters had mentioned Thursday smoke detectors possibly non-functional. “Just to correct this, we are unable to confirm or deny. We will have to go into the building to make sure,” added Mr. Guilbault. He had no details on the state of health of the nine occupants of the building taken to the hospital. Among them are three seriously injured.
