More than two weeks after the train disaster that killed 57 people, Greece is expected to be largely paralyzed by a general strike on Thursday March 16. After a large rally of 40,000 people in Athens on March 8, further demonstrations are planned across the country to express defiance of the government of conservative Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

At the call of trade unions in the public sector but also, for the first time, in the private sector, tens of thousands of people must once again take to the streets with a risk of new violence between certain demonstrators and the police.

Very disrupted transport

Greece is expected to be largely paralyzed, especially transport. All boats connecting the mainland to the islands will remain docked. Air traffic should be severely disrupted, the planes of the national company Aegean Airlines will remain on the tarmac. Rail traffic should not gradually resume until March 22, according to the Minister of Transport.

Many schools will also be closed as students, on the front lines of a wave of protests not seen since the years of the financial crisis, have also planned to protest.
