Cinema: when the profession of midwife is exercised in the masculine

Leopold failed the medical examination and must take a path he did not choose: the profession of midwifery. The young man finds himself a bit lost in a woman’s universe. “I wanted to take the problem upside down. Instead of it being a woman who has to succeed in a man’s world, it’s a man who has to struggle a bit in a woman’s world. So motherhood struck me as the place where women are kind of the bosses“, explains Jennifer Devoldère, the director.

Down with prejudice

But meeting Nathalie, a midwife, will change everything. “Léopold will open up and will want to know this profession in depth”, says Melvin Boomer, who plays Leopold in the film. In the sector, Adrien Gantois is one of the 1% of male midwives. “(…) There is all this reflection in this film which is interesting, it is to say to oneself: down with these prejudices, down with these representations, why could a man not become a midwife?“he says.
