Mexico | Ten dead and five injured in bar attack

(Apaseo el Grande) Ten people died and five others injured in a violent attack at a bar in Mexico, authorities said on Sunday.

At 11 p.m. (12 a.m. EST) on Saturday, a group of armed men burst in and fired at customers and employees of this establishment located on a road connecting the cities of Celaya and Queretaro, in the state of Guanajuato, in the center of the country.

Eight people died, two women and six men, seven others were injured and remain “unidentified at this time”, according to the official report from the state attorney’s office.

The municipality of Apaseo el Grande announced a few hours later the death at the Celaya public hospital of two of the injured, a 23-year-old woman and a 16-year-old minor.

The vital prognosis is reserved for five injured who suffer serious injuries, official sources said.

The Guanajuato state government is working with the Public Ministry to “find those responsible” and be “in contact with the families of those affected”, according to an official statement.

Guanajuato, a thriving industrial state, has become Mexico’s most violent due to rivalries between the Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels over their shared activities, including drug trafficking and fuel theft.

The two organizations dispute this territory with extreme violence.
