(New York) The Terrifying Scream VI scared off Creed III and took the lead at the North American box office, with $44.5 million in revenue the weekend of its release, according to estimates on Sunday by the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
The sixth installment in the acclaimed horror film series is off to the best start in Paramount Studios franchise history since its launch in 1996, according to these Friday-Sunday box office earnings estimates in the United States and Canada.
At the time, the film by Wes Craven, who died in 2015, had rejuvenated the genre with a mixture of horror and self-mockery, a recipe on which Scream always bet.
