Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has been fined for batting Edmonton Oilers Quebec defender Vincent Desharnais.
On Sunday, the National Hockey League (NHL) player safety department issued a $5,000 fine to the 32-year-old veteran. He received the maximum fine allowed by the collective agreement for having targeted one of the wrists of the native of Laval.
In the third period of Saturday’s game between the Leafs and the Oilers, Tavares and Desharnais battled it out in front of the Edmonton squad. The rear of the Belle Province served several blows in the back of the representative of the Queen City. The latter took revenge by hitting his rival’s forearm directly. Both skaters received two-minute minor penalties on the streak.
Desharnais, 26, was playing his 22nd game of the NHL season and career against the Maple Leafs. The defensive-minded defenseman had four assists and 23 penalty minutes in the Bettman circuit.
