While the Mediterranean Sea is particularly turbulent, on Saturday March 11, the Italian authorities came to the rescue of drifting migrant ships. Two weeks earlier, a shipwreck had caused dozens of deaths.

More than 500 migrants safe and sound, but exhausted, were able to land on Saturday, March 11, in Reggio Calabria in Italy. They were rescued off the Calabrian coast, adrift in totally overloaded boats. On images published by the Italian coastguards, we see them helping hundreds of women and men crowded into the hull of a boat. In total, more than 1,300 migrants were rescued in two days on the most dangerous migration route in the world and in a particularly rough Mediterranean Sea.

74th victim of recent shipwreck discovered

“The intervention of our ship saved 800 people in difficult weather conditions. Other operations were carried out in coordination with the government”, said Fabio Borriello, captain of the Italian Coast Guard vessel ‘Dattila’. Several coastguard vessels, an ocean-going vessel and the help of the French navy were needed. A new rescue operation which comes at the same time as the discovery of a 74e victim of the shipwreck which took place in the same area two weeks earlier. Since the beginning of the year, nearly 18,000 people have landed in Italy, three times more than in the same period last year.
