In 2022, the hourly wage gap between men and women reached $3.25.
The Statistical Institute of Quebec thus specifies that the average hourly remuneration of women aged 15 and over reached $29.29 in 2022, and that of men in the same age group, $32.54. This means that for every dollar earned by a man, a woman earned $0.90.
The fact remains that the gaps between men and women have been decreasing over the past ten years, all things considered. The same is true for weekly earnings, which in 2022 showed a gap of $229.62 between men and women. Women’s weekly earnings were then $989.08, and men’s, $1,218.70.
While this gap is large in dollar terms, it is actually less than before in percentage terms, as salary levels have climbed over the years for both men and women. Indeed, a salary of $400 and another of $500 give a difference of $100, and salaries of $900 and $1000 also give a difference of $100. But the difference of $100 does not have the same weight in the two cases.
These fresh statistics published on the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day also show that the gender gap has decreased more rapidly in weekly earnings than in hourly earnings. This suggests that women’s work time would have increased, which would have further reduced their lag compared to men in this regard.
