In Villejuif (Val-de-Marne), 40,000 m3 of construction waste was deposited during confinement, creating a gigantic open dump. Why weren’t they evacuated three years later? Investigation.

A few steps from the Gustave Institute Roussy in Villejuif (Val-de-Marne), hospital excellence in the fight against cancer, there are 40,000 cubic meters of waste and polluting products abandoned on a site belonging to the State. How could such a discharge have taken place? The mountain of waste revolts the residents. “It’s a horror, it’s a scandal”plague a woman. Three years ago, the former military fort was free of any pollution, but the site became a landfill in March 2020, during the lockdown.

A health emergency

At the time, local residents filmed vans dumping their waste on the site. A godsend for unscrupulous building companies who prefer not to pay recycling costs. It took more than a year for the state to react and shut down the site. The mayor of Villejuif has been asking the State for two and a half years to remove the waste, some of which is dangerous for the inhabitants. “We have more to do with an accounting management of the situation than with a health emergency which is not taken into account”denounces Pierre Garzon, mayor (PCF) of Villejuif.
