Climate crisis threatens national security, warns CSIS

(Ottawa) Climate change poses a profound threat to the country’s national security and prosperity, warns the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). A rise in sea level could in particular engulf parts of British Columbia and the Atlantic provinces.

In a recent analysis, CSIS also says it fears the rise in violence from groups advocating radical solutions to the fight against climate change or from people wanting to preserve their current way of life.

The note was written in April 2021. The Canadian Press recently obtained a copy through the Access to Information Act.

CSIS lists several of its concerns related to global warming: threats to Arctic coasts, border security, pressures on water and food supplies.

According to the spy agency, this threat will not suddenly reveal itself. It will not crystallize at a specific time.

She predicts that the process is already underway and will slowly unfold over the next few decades.
