Thousands of Greeks marched in Athens and several cities across the country to demand “the truth” about the causes of the disaster that killed at least 57 people.

More than 2,000 angry Greeks observed a minute’s silence on Friday, March 3, outside Parliament in Athens in memory of the 57 people killed in the collision of two trains on Tuesday. After this minute of meditation, the rallies, on the theme “We mourn our dead, we ask for the truth”, headed to the headquarters of the Hellenic Train railway company, implicated for numerous negligence which led to this disaster.
On third day of national mourning, Greeks demand accountability despite government mea culpa on failures “chronicles” of the rail network which led to the accident. “We are filled with rage and cannot accept that such a tragic event could occur in 2023, with dozens of lives lost, including many fellow students”highlighted the student leader Angelos Thomopoulos.
Railway strike
In Larissa, the city closest to the accident, and in Patras, a university town in the Peloponnese, 700 demonstrators, according to the police, also protested. A new demonstration is also expected at the end of the day in the country’s second city, Thessaloniki, where many victims were studying.
Railway workers are also called to strike on Friday, for the second day in a row. The confederation of rail unions denounces “the lack of respect that governments have shown over time towards the Greek railways, which has led” to this drama.
