Nordstrom leaves Canada and cuts 2,500 jobs

(Toronto) Nordstrom is closing all of its Canadian stores and cutting 2,500 jobs as it winds down operations in the country.

The Seattle-based retailer has six Nordstrom stores and seven Nordstrom Rack stores in Canada, which will be closed by the end of June.

Its e-commerce business will cease operations on Thursday.

Nordstrom CEO Erik Nordstrom said the company was leaving Canada because it did not see a realistic path to profitability for the company in the country.

Liquidation is effected by an order obtained by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice under the Companies Creditors Arrangement Act.

Nordstrom first announced plans to expand into Canada in 2012 and opened its first store in Calgary at the CF Chinook Center in September 2014.

The stores, which sell shoes as well as clothing and accessories, are located in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.
