2.34 tonnes of cocaine have been found on the Channel coast since Sunday February 26, franceinfo learned from a source familiar with the matter on Thursday March 2. A first discovery took place on Sunday when several bags were found in Réville (Manche) with 840 kg of drugs inside.

A few days later, this Wednesday, around 1.5 tonnes of cocaine was discovered inside other bags in Vicq-sur-Mer (Manche). Following these discoveries, two separate investigations were opened, land, sea and air reconnaissance were carried out to detect any other packages. The retail value is estimated at 152 million euros.

Investigators must now try to trace the route of these bags. The maritime prefecture affirmed that a “Special surveillance of the maritime approaches to the North Cotentin sector was maintained and ensured by air means”. “New overflights as well as maritime patrols are carried out”, she added. It is the parquet floor of the interregional jurisdiction of Rennes which is seized of the investigation.

This is not the first time that cocaine has arrived on the French coast. At the end of 2019, bales containing a total of 1.6 tonnes of white powder had washed up on the beaches of an area ranging from Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) to Camaret (Finistère).
