The Chinese social media TikTok is singled out in different countries because it could be a spy tool for the Beijing regime. The application has just been banned from the European Commission and Parliament.
TikTok arrived in Europe four years ago, this social network was created by the Chinese company ByteDance. The application is popular with young people, out of a billion users, 60% are between 16 and 24 years old. But today, it arouses mistrust, in particular for the risk of espionage. In Brussels, TikTok will no longer be allowed in the European Commission and Parliament, employees will have to delete it from their work phones by March 15.
A parliamentary inquiry into the issue in France
The app has already been banned from officials in Denmark, Canada and the United States. The social network has access to the microphones, cameras and location of its users, all personal data that may be in the hands of an authoritarian regime, China. Contacted, the social network refutes these accusations of espionage. “These bans are based on misinformation about our business, and we are ready to meet with the authorities to establish the truth”, the TikTok spokesperson said in a statement. In France, the Senate has launched a parliamentary inquiry to determine whether or not there is a risk of espionage. This could lead to the media being banned.
