The government hammers it, it wants the establishment of an anti-inflation basket, as soon as possible. But the signs do not seem to agree and prefer to display low prices on certain products, not always the most popular.

The government’s target is set, on March 15, there will be lower prices and promotions in all French supermarkets to fight inflation. On Wednesday March 1 in the morning, Olivier Véran, government spokesperson and Olivia Grégoire, Minister Delegate for Trade, took it upon themselves to remind them. The pressure is increasing, but the brands are defending themselves by saying they are already doing a lot of discounts and promotions, in particular with blocked prices, discounts on loyalty cards and entire zero-waste shelves.

Retailers reject anti-inflation basket

An Auchan store in Cergy-Pontoise displays signs with the ‘low price’ motion above fruit and vegetables, to display “the cheapest option”according to its director. “We are cutting back on our margins”, he explains. But for a mother, it needs more related items. “We’re not going to eat lemon every day, that’s the kind of thing, for me, it’s useless at all. But for things that you can eat every day (…), yes, it is necessary”, she says. The government therefore wants a common anti-inflation basket with a list of low-cost products, but most retailers reject the proposal. Discussions still need to continue.
