The director of the FBI affirmed, Tuesday February 28, that a laboratory accident in Wuhan (China) is “very probably” cause of the Covid-19 pandemic. In a Fox News interview (in English)Christopher Wray also accused China of trying to block the investigation led by the United States into the causes of the epidemic, which has killed more than 7 million people worldwide since 2020 and shaken the march of the world during months. “The Chinese government (…) has done its best to try to thwart and confuse the work we are doing”assured the director of the FBI.

The comment comes days after the US Department of Energy made a similar assumption. The ministry, which oversees biology laboratories in the United States, advanced this theory after learning of new intelligence, according to anonymous sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, THE New York Times and CNN. These media, however, insist that this new analysis is published “with a low level of confidence”.

A thesis contested by China

The US intelligence world is now even more divided, with some believing that Covid-19 arose through natural transmission. For its part, Beijing vigorously disputes the thesis of the virus leaking from a laboratory. For the scientific community, it is crucial to determine the origin of the pandemic, in order to better prevent and fight a next epidemic wave.
