This new model, which was initially to be named ID.2, would be unveiled as a style study during the month of March, according to the media. Its design is overseen by former Bentley and Audi design boss Andreas Mindt.
While the Golf’s sales volume has greatly decreased in North America due to the offer consisting solely of the GTI and R sports versions since 2021, the model remains very popular in Europe. The name therefore remains immensely well known, even on this side of the Atlantic.
This electric Golf would be built on the next-generation MEB platform and would rely on a charging power of 200 kW feeding a battery composed of lithium-iron-phosphate, no doubt to lower production costs. Volkswagen is reportedly targeting an overall length of 4.3m, the same as the eighth-generation Golf currently on the market. Thanks to the more compact appearance of electrical components, the interior space could be more abundant.
The name GTI, associated since 1976 with a spicy livery that paved the way for the democratization of the sports compact, would survive electrification. Note that the MEB platform can also receive a second electric motor, which would retain the advantage of all-wheel drive that is part of the paraphernalia of the current Golf R.
