A year ago, France 2 told you the story of a father who wanted to shelter his children while his wife had decided to stay in Ukraine to help her own mother. The 2 women were eventually killed. The 20 Hours returned to take news of this bruised family.

Hand in hand with their father, Dacha has grown up and is now 14 years old. Masha, her little sister, is six. A year has passed since the family met with the France 2 team, under the bombs. Their mother was still by their side. “Mom is always on my mind”, says Masha. Their mother was called Anna. France 2 had met Anna and her family last March at the foot of their building in Irpin (Ukraine). Mortar fire was falling nearby. The little girls were hugged close to their mother.

Mother hit by shrapnel

The father wanted his daughters to leave but Anna refused to stay with her mother. “We really argued (…) I could not reason with her”, says her husband. The day after the dispute, the building was bombed again. Anna was hit by shrapnel. “I see her, I take her in my arms and I understand that it’s over”, says her husband. With their father, the girls then took refuge in western Ukraine and then in Germany where they live today.
