The Chinese application is suspected of being specialized in spying on a very large scale, so much so that the European Commission has just asked its employees to remove it from their phones.
Chinese app TikTok worried. The 33,000 employees of the European Commission will have to erase it by March 15. “It is clear that there is a security problem, we know that Brussels is an international spy powerhouse”, believes Christiano Sebastiani, president of the Renewal and Democracy union. The application has access to the microphone, photos or even geolocation.
TikTok rejects the charges
In 2022, the United States banned its use in the Senate and the House of Representatives, after a scandal involving two reporters spied on by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. The French Senate launched an investigation in early February. “Chinese law obliges any company to cooperate with Chinese intelligence services”, says Claude Malhuret, senator and president of the group Les Indépendants. The app denies the espionage charges. European user data will soon be stored in Ireland, but the company does not say whether Chinese authorities will have access to the information feeds.
