In Normandy, the coast is not spared by erosion. Wednesday, February 22, part of the cliff, in the town of Fécamp, collapsed about fifteen meters. A landslide that caused no casualties.
The side of the cliff came off in a few seconds. This road is still in danger of collapsing. The landslide, 40 meters wide and 15 meters deep, occurred on Wednesday evening in Fécamp (Seine-Maritime). The Calvary of the sailors, icon of the city, was carried away. At the top of the cliff, a security perimeter of 100 meters has been established. Three unoccupied houses are now inaccessible, the roads around are blocked.
Second landslide since the beginning of the year
“A cliff is an avalanche corridor. You never know when it’s going to go away”, says Pierre Aubry, first deputy mayor of Fécamp. Since the beginning of the year, this is the second time that an event of this type has occurred in Fécamp. A year ago, it was near Étretat (Seine-Maritime) that a piece of cliff fell off. Each year, about sixty landslides occur on the Normandy coast.
