The bus driver who ran into a daycare center in the Sainte-Rose district of Laval is fit to stand trial. His lawyer, however, immediately requested another psychiatric evaluation to determine whether or not he could be held criminally responsible for mental illness.
On February 8, Pierre Ny St-Amand was accused of driving a Société de transport de Laval bus into a daycare centre, killing two children and injuring six others.
Last week, his lawyer, Mr.e Julien Lespérance Hudon, had requested a psychiatric evaluation of his client. It concluded that the man is fit to stand trial, the lawyer reported Friday morning at the Laval courthouse.
But he now says he has reason to believe his client was unable to tell right from wrong when he performed the actions for which he is now facing justice.
The 51-year-old man will thus have to remain detained at the National Institute of Forensic Psychiatry Philippe-Pinel, where this second psychiatric evaluation will also be carried out.
More details will follow.
