Friday, February 24, will be one year to the day since the invasion began in Ukraine. At the start of the conflict, the city of Mykolaiv was under fire from the Russian army, civilians were in cellars. A year later, what have they become?

Ivan surveys the now empty missile shelter, a cellar located Mykolaiv (Ukraine) where he spent days and nights To tried to reassure the occupants in the ground, fear in their stomachs. It was last March. “They send bombs on civilians, where people are sleeping, here and all over the city”reported Ivan at that time. Former boss of a network of service stations, he had established himself as the boss in the cellar, surrounded by civilians. They were a hundred in the basement.

City drains out of order

Today, most have taken refuge abroad. Ivan stayed at Mykolaiv, but put his family away from the city. “This year of war taught me not to plan. I don’t try to imagine what my future will be. (…) Currently, my only mission is to help others”says Ivan. The bombings have ceased, but he leads a new battle: that of water. The city’s pipes have been out of order for months, so a cistern brings in some 20,000 liters of water.
