(Montreal) Airlines are warning that travel to and from central Canada could be affected by a winter storm moving in from the west.
Blizzard conditions could cause delays to flights to and from airports in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal on Wednesday and Thursday, Air Canada and WestJet said.
Air Canada had already delayed or canceled Wednesday afternoon more than 100 flights for the day – about 23% of its daily supply. WestJet had postponed or canceled 91 flights, or nearly a third of its trips, according to FlightAware.
The tracking service said carriers had already canceled some 2,200 flights to the United States early Wednesday afternoon, also threatening to halt travel and connecting flights for Canadians.
Environment Canada warns that heavy snowfall will hit parts of southern Ontario starting in the late afternoon, followed by ice pellets and freezing rain overnight.
Snowfall could total 10 to 15 centimeters with winds blowing at 50 to 70 kilometers per hour as the low pressure system progresses from the southwestern United States.
“We are monitoring the weather and have made some schedule adjustments in anticipation of the storm, and this is continuing as the situation evolves,” Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said in an email. noting that customers could choose to modify their booking or opt for a refund.
Jazz Aviation, which operates regional flights for Air Canada Express, canceled 75 of its Wednesday flights, or 16% of its supply, according to FlightAware.
