On the land of the Charolais cow, the regional park of Morvan proposed to a dozen farmers to set up an outdoor pork industry. A less expensive breeding which makes it possible to diversify the activity and which now claims a protected geographical indication.
In the Morvan, most farmers are engaged in breeding Charolais cows. But recently, cattle cohabit with pigs in freedom. “If I hadn’t had this opportunity, I would have had to take over additional surfaces, meadows and cows. There, that’s a diversification”explains Ludovic Chevalier, breeder at Lucenay-l’Eveque (Saone-et-Loire). The beef market is fragile, so to help farmers, the Morvan regional park has offered to set up an outdoor pork industry. An inexpensive investment.
A gain of nearly 4,000 euros per year
Breeders can thus earn around 4,000 euros per year, without having to advance money. Expenses are deducted from the remuneration. The pork is then processed in a local salting company using traditional methods. The objective of the sector is to obtain the protected geographical indication. Morvan free-range ham is now prominently displayed on local supermarket shelves, selling for just three euros per kilo more than battery pig. All the pieces try to be valued. Ten farmers are taking part in this adventure. No question of switching to industrial production.
