(Courchevel) The Swiss Marco Odermatt was crowned giant slalom world champion on Friday in Courchevel, obtaining his second title since the start of the competition after the downhill on Sunday.
The world No.1 was 32/100 ahead of his compatriot Loïc Meillard, silver medalist, and 40/100 the Austrian Marco Schwarz, finally bronze medalist when he had dominated the first round.
This new title confirms Odermatt a little more as the new king of alpine skiing. Olympic gold medalist last year and winner of four of the five giants he has competed in this season, “Odi” further confirms his dominance in this discipline.
“When you win once, you want to win a second time… so it’s not over,” he warned after his triumphant descent.
Huge favorite of the event, the 25-year-old skier first assured in the first run, concluded in second position behind Schwarz, untouchable.
Then Odermatt put pressure on Schwarz, taking the leader’s seat before the Austrian took off. As often, the 27-year-old skier cracked under the pressure to finally take third place behind “Odi” and Loïc Meillard, author of a fantastic second run.
