After the earthquake, hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless. The electricity network and the drinking water network are also often out of service. Beyond the appalling toll, the prospect of a major humanitarian and health crisis is emerging.

Funerals take place from morning to evening, in discontinuer. Simple numbers are inscribed on improvised graves by the thousands. Beyond the distress, the survivors must learn to survive with the threat of a health crisis. More than a million find themselves without housing in Turkey, as many families without drinking water, without sanitation or electricity. The lucky ones are accommodated in tents. “I need help, that’s why I try to find useful things for my wife, my children and me”testifies a survivor.

NGOs fear spread of disease

In the north of neighboring Syria, these are the same scenes of desolation. The towns are partly razed and the field hospitals submerged, despite being worn in war scenes. “We are used to managing 10, 20, 30 wounded after an airstrike, the hospital can withstand that, but we are not prepared for an earthquake of such magnitude, it is very difficult”, confides Mohamed Al-Badr, surgeon at Harim hospital (Syria). NGOs fear that they will not be able to treat survivors and the spread of disease.
