Phoenix Open | Scheffler retains Arizona title

(Scottsdale) Scottie Scheffler successfully defended his Phoenix Open title on Sunday, reclaiming the top spot in the world rankings.


Scheffler finished with a 65, beating British Columbian Nick Taylor by two strokes.

The 26-year-old Texan snatched the top spot from Rory McIlroy with his fifth PGA win.

Taylor won 2.18 million – by far his biggest earnings for a single tournament.

The Abbotsford golfer had total career earnings of 9.1 million, thanks in part to two PGA titles.

Last year, Scheffler beat Patrick Cantlay in overtime to claim a first title on the circuit.

Scheffler has since added wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Match Match Championship and Masters Tournament. He was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year.

Scheffler hit an eagle with a 22-foot putt on 13e hole to break a tie with Taylor, then he took a two-shot lead at 16e stalling a putt of 15 feet, for a par.

Scheffler added a birdie at 17e and concluded with a par for a total of 265, minus 19.

He won 3.6 million of a total purse of 20 million.

Taylor also finished with a 65. The Canadian bogeyed the 16emissing his shot from seven feet.

Adam Hadwin, also of Abbotsford, finished 10e at 10 under par, after a 71.

Former Arizona State star Jon Rahm finished third at 14-under after a 68.

McIlroy finished with a 70 to finish at under four, tied for 32e rank.
