Canada wrapped up the final day of the final leg of the short track speed skating World Cup on Sunday in Dordrecht, Netherlands, picking up five medals, including two gold.
The women’s delegation played a leading role in this harvest, starting with Courtney Sarault, gold medalist in the 1,000 meters in addition to being part of the team that ranked first in the women’s 3,000 meters relay, during the penultimate race of the day.
In the 1,000 metres, the Moncton-based athlete clocked the distance in one minute 32.930 seconds and edged South Korean Gilli Kim (1:33.037) and Dutch Suzanne Schulting (1:33.137).
In the relay event, Sarault teamed up with Kim Boutin, Rikki Doak and Renee Steenge to stop the clock at 4:13.541, well ahead of Hungary (4:15.134) and China (4:15.201) .
Boutin and Doak also reached the podium in individual events, during the same race, the 500 meters. But the two Canadians had to leave the highest step of the podium to the Dutch Xandra Velzeboer, author of a time of 42.020 seconds.
Saturday’s gold medalist in the 1,000 metres, Boutin, of Sherbrooke, was second in 42.301 seconds while Doak clocked 42.397 seconds.
Pascal Dion collected the only medal of the day among Canada’s men’s delegation with a second place finish in the 1,000 meters in 1:25.514. He was only beaten to the finish line by South Korean Jo Won Park (1:25.359).
On Saturday, over the same distance, Dion also finished in second place, this time behind his compatriot Steven Dubois.
The latter did not have so much luck on Sunday, having to settle for a participation in Final B, which he nevertheless won with a time of 1:26.306.
