In 2012, Jallal Hami, a brilliant cadet from Saint-Cyr, drowned during a “hustling”. In 2020, of the seven defendants, only three received a suspended prison sentence. Rachid, his filmmaker older brother, made a film of it. For “Special Envoy”, he tells the family story.
On October 30, 2012, Jallal Hami, a graduate of Science-Po Paris and a brilliant student officer of the prestigious Saint-Cyr school, died drowned at the age of 24 in an exercise in “transmission of traditions”, in other words hazing, within from the military academy. It took eight years before the seven defendants, five former students and two ex-members of the hierarchy, appeared before the Rennes criminal court in 2020. Only three of them were sentenced, and only to prison suspended sentence for manslaughter.
“For France”, a feature film against oblivion
Rachid, his older brother, made it the fight of his life, to honor the memory of his younger brother. “My fight is to tell this story over and over again, so that no one can ever forget Jallal.” he explains. Now a filmmaker, his new feature film, For France, released in theaters on February 8, looks back on the life of Jallal, his death, and his funeral. Rachid recounts the family journey.
